IMDb profile |
The Big Store is a 1941 MGM Marx Brothers comedy film in which Groucho, Chico and Harpo work to save the Phelps department store. Groucho plays the detective/bodyguard Wolf J. Flywheel.
It was advertised as their last ever film; however, they returned to the screen in A Night in Casablanca.
The Big Store co-starred Marx Brothers' foil Margaret Dumont as well as Tony Martin and Virginia Grey. The "heavy" was Mr. Grover, played by Douglass Dumbrille, the same actor who was the "heavy" in A Day at the Races.
The movie contains the usual MGM production numbers, such as "Sing While You Sell" and "Tenement Symphony" sung by Tony Martin.
One of the memorable scenes is in the store's bed department, which has all kinds of novel beds. An Italian family comes in with 12 kids. Six of the kids get lost (in a set of bunk beds) and Groucho convinces the father, played by Henry Armetta, that he couldn't have 12 kids because he can't afford it.
Tagline: "Where everything is a good buy. Goodbye!"
