The setting for the story is four different 12-year old girls who go for a whole summer-long vacation on Gull Island, at their Grandmother Gee's huge 12-acre property titled 'The Sound'.
Hillary Callahan has strawberry-blonde hair and is the most athletic of all the cousins. She seems to like 'boarding' the best, as she is described as having snowboarding and skateboarding magazines. As of the first book The Callahan Cousins: Summer Begins, Hillary's parents are getting divorced. She is shy around meeting new people, unlike Neeve, whom Hillary can get to do anything with her, while Kate and Phoebe are usually reluctant. Hillary comes from Colorado.
Neeve Callahan has black cowlicked hair and has moved to lots of different countries, from Kenya to Singapore. She gets many cool clothes and makeup from these countries, so she always ends up looking very sophiscated all the time. She is the most outgoing cousin and she appears to "flirt" with every boy she meets. In the second book, The Callahan Cousins: Home Sweet Home, she discovers a family secret.
Kate Callahan has short brown hair, and she is the most sensitive cousin. She is very sweet and caring, and she doesn't like when people fight and she might start crying if someone starts yelling at her. She earned the nickname "Martha Stewart" because she likes to bake and do crafty things like needlepoint. A book where Kate is the main character has yet to be written. She lives in the suburbs.
Phoebe Callahan has long, bright blonde hair and she lives in Florida. She is the smartest cousin with a large vocabulary that she often uses. She is a total neatnik that reads every single night, though not in the day often for some reason. She usually doesn't agree to go adventures right away, but she usually secretly is raring for adventure. A book about Phoebe has not been written yet.
[edit] The Sound
The Sound is Gee's 12-acre property. There are 14 bedrooms and an unknown amount of bathrooms, but the house is kept neat by Sheila Bicket, the housemaid, and the whole house is full of family photos. There is also a fingernail of a beach, a pet cemetery, a cove called "The Promised Land", the Fallen Down Trees, and a small Dorm that the girls start fixing up to live in for part of the summer.
