The news and rumors have finally been confirmed, a City of Ember film will be made with a target release year of 2009.

Jeanne DuPrau has stated, on her website, that film rights for The City of Ember have been optioned. The Sci-Fi channel's news service, Sci-Fi Wire, has reported that Tom Hanks' production company, PlayTone, has obtained the rights, that Caroline Thompson (Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands) is writing the screenplay and that Gil Kenan (Monster House, Pac Man) is scheduled to direct. Sc-Fi Wire has also reported that Walden Media (Holes, The Chronicles of Narnia) would be another primary production company.
Tom Hanks' production company, Playtone, have recently picked Belfast, Northern Ireland as the filming location for "The City of Ember" which will be filmed in the Titanic-Quarter[1] area of the city. Filming will begin this summer.[2]
