The Diary (Traditional Chinese: 日記; Simplified Chinese: 日记; pinyin: Rì Jì) is a historical film directed by Stanley Tong, about the Nanking Massacre. It is slated for release on 13 December 2007, the 70th anniversary of the Massacre. Although it is based on historical facts, the director has said it is not meant to be a documentary.
Tong secured the Chinese government's approval to film this extremely sensitive and taboo event in April 2006, and some of his other productions will be delayed so that this film can be released on time.

[edit] Plot
Although the Nanking Massacre is the setting for the film, it will actually begin with the Marco Polo Bridge Incident and end with the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal. But a large part of the film will be told from the perspective of several westerners who set the Nanjing Safety Zone.
[edit] Cast
Tong stated that he would like Maggie Cheung to play the role of Principal Wu of the Jinling Girls' Middle School, Andy Lau an anti-Japanese fighter, and Fujiwara a nurse in the Imperial Japanese Army. The cast will also include actors of USA and Germany.
