The Dirtbombs are a rock and roll band based in Detroit, Michigan, notable for blending diverse influences such as punk rock, glam, and soul while featuring a dual bass guitar, dual drum lineup. The Dirtbombs were formed by Mick Collins (of the influential garage rock band The Gories) as a side project and started recording songs by 1995[1].
In the decade since their conception, the Dirtbombs have hosted a revolving door of musicians both in the studio and on the road. As of June 2004 the band’s 17th and current lineup consists of Collins on guitar, Troy Gregory (formerly of Flotsam and Jetsam, Prong, and lead singer of The Witches and Troy Gregory & The Stepsisters) on bass, Ko Melina (formerly of Ko & The Knockouts) on a distorted “fuzz” bass, and Ben Blackwell (owner of record label Cass Records) and Pat Pantano (also of The Come Ons) on the drum sets. For a brief time in 2002, the band featured back-up singers Deanne Iovan (also of The Come Ons) and future bass player Ko, in addition to the 5 musicians.
Originally conceived as a “singles band”, the Dirtbombs were to record only 7” records; record label [In The Red], however, persuaded them to record an LP. Collins decided that if the band were to record a full-length album they would treat the entire album like a giant single, meaning that each would demonstrate one musical idea. 1998's Horndog Fest was a punk rock record, 2001’s Ultraglide in Black was a collection of nearly all soul, R & B, and Motown covers, and 2003’s Dangerous Magical Noise was a pop rock album. In 2005 the band released If You Don’t Already Have a Look… a 2-disc collection of their singles and rarities, as well as six new songs.
In the summer of 2006, the band's song "Trainwreck" was used in a Walmart television commercial. [2] Spin magazine listed the Dirtbombs at number 10 on their list of "Top 25 Live Bands Now" in the September 2006 issue.[3] [4]
In late 2006, Collins confirmed that the next Dirtbombs LP will be in the theme of bubblegum pop and that the band plans on recording several singles. The song "I Can't Stop Thinking About It", from Horndog Fest, was used in a Buick radio commercial in early 2007.
