"The Dolphin's Cry" is a song by the alternative rock band Live. It was released as the lead single from their fourth studio album The Distance to Here in 1999. This song was co-produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads, who also assisted the band in producing their first two albums.
It is considered one of their most popular songs, with powerful, if cryptic, lyrics. There has been much debate amongst fans regarding the meaning of this song. One interpretation is that the song describes both the love between two creatures and a greater universal love. Another is that the lyrics describe the reunion of two lovers after a period of separation. In some concerts, lead singer Ed Kowalczyk has stated that the song is simply about sex on the beach.
The powerful repeated chorus lyrics "love will lead us" is in keeping with The Distance to Here's religious undertones, a superior omnipotent, omniscient being or force leading us through life. Similar songs include "Run to the Water," "They Stood Up for Love" and "Where Fishes Go," all from the same album.
