The Door in the Wall is a 1949 novel by Marguerite de Angeli that received the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1950.

The story, illustrated by the author, is set in medieval England, as plague is sweeping across the country. Young Robin wants to be a knight like his father, but his dreams are endangered when he becomes ill, finally losing the use of his legs. Fearing the plague Robin's servants abandon him. He is saved when Brother Luke, a monk takes him to a monastery and cares for him.
Brother Luke teaches Robin how to swim and carve wood, but Robin also learns patience and strength from the monk.
In spite of his handicap, Robin has an opportunity to be a hero when an invading army attacks the castle where he is staying while waiting to be reunited with his father.Than he meets up with his father.
