[edit] Plot syopsis
While walking through the park with her boyfriend Alex, Claire worries whether she is really making a difference in her work, prompting Alex to reassure her with a "reward" for her efforts: a temporary tattoo of a heart on the back of her hand. Later, Claire is visited at her office by her mentor, Dr. Darcy Wyatt, who is in Chicago for the launch party for her first book, The End of an Eros, at the planetarium; Claire asks how long Darcy will be in town, apparently inviting her to Claire's singles group meeting.
At the meeting, a cosmogonist named Gabe discusses his problems with rejection, which he still finds better than success. Darcy then shares the shocking conclusion at the heart of her book: Romantic love (not to be confused with needs for companionship or sex) is entirely unnecessary. She then asks the group to share their goals; Gabe's is finding "someone whose every move is magic," who makes him forget his fears. Both Claire and Trevor argue on romance's behalf, but when Trevor cannot tell a "love story" that isn't based on sexual exploits, Darcy concludes that he's never been in love himself.
With the meeting cut short, Claire gets home early for Alex's surprise candlelight dinner and big news: He's been offered a job with The New York Times, but it would require him to move. An upset Claire decides that she's either being asked to make the decision for him or approve his own choice; she tells him to take the job, then leaves the room.
The next meeting draws only four people, and Claire and Trevor find the rest at Taggerty's afterward. A regular at the bar, Cynthia, runs into Gabe and spills beer on him, but when she tries to clean him up and buy him a drink, he returns to the group. The two meet again later: Gabe helps Cynthia break into the Volkswagen Beetle she's locked the keys inside, and she buys him breakfast to say thanks. The two hit it off, but Gabe backs off when Cynthia expresses interest. Cynthia and Trevor then commiserate at Taggerty's about the failed date, and she notes that Gabe also seemed interested. Trevor sets up a date, leaving several messages on Gabe's answering machine about it.
At Claire's office, Darcy inquires about her star student's problem, suggesting that Claire cope with Alex's move by making him less important to her. A panicked Gabe stops by for advice about his date; Darcy advises him to avoid heartbreak by canceling, and Claire concurs. He takes this advice, and when Cynthia answers her doorbell, she is met only by an apologetic Trevor trying to cover for Gabe. Later that night, Champ gets a call from the bartender at another bar, arriving there to find a drunken Trevor sprawled on the men's room floor, slurring that love has become obsolete.
Claire is sitting in the park when her thoughts are interrupted by a woman with a baby in a stroller — a fan who credits one of Claire's columns with helping save her marriage. The fan asks about Claire's now-fading temporary tattoo, which she had apparently forgotten about. At home, Claire finds an answering-machine message from Alex, telling her he's not taking the job.
Hoping to set right the mistake she's made with Gabe, Claire arrives at Champ's apartment to find Trevor in the very painful midst of what he claims is his first hangover. They eventually go to Taggerty's to devise a plan, noting that the description Gabe gave of his ideal is strikingly similar to the lyrics of the Police song "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic."
Trevor and Claire separately escort Cynthia and Gabe to the book launch, but when Cynthia mentions hoping not to "accidentally" bump into Gabe, Trevor tries to call off the plan. Gabe is ushered into the planetarium, while Cynthia is taken to the auditorium below it. In the planetarium's control room, Trevor and Claire are arguing when Claire accidentally hits a button, revealing an escalator from the auditorium. As "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" plays, Cynthia rides the escalator up to the planetarium — and Gabe, who asks her for another chance. The two kiss as Claire and Trevor are joined in the control room by a still-skeptical Darcy.
Claire takes Alex to the airport, outlining the specific conditions of his move to New York (including "spontaneous" flower deliveries once a month). She puts on a brave face in Alex's presence, but cries after he's on the plane.
