The Gainesville Sun (ISSN 0163-4925) is a newspaper published daily in Gainesville, Florida, United States, covering the north central portion of the state. It is a part of the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. The paper is published by James E. Doughton, the paper's Executive Editor is Jim Osteen, managing editor is Jacki Levine, and the editorial page editor is Ron Cunningham. The paper is also home to a nationally syndicated cartoonist, Jake Fuller. The paper was founded in 1875 as the [Gainesville Times by brothers Wm Wade Hampton Atty. and Edwin Hampton.
The Gainesville Sun has won two Pulitzer Prizes: one in 1971, Horance G. Davis Jr. of The Gainesville Sun (Fla.) for his editorials in support of peaceful desegregation of the Alachua County school system; and another in 1965, John R. Harrison for his successful editorial campaign for better housing in Gainesville.
The paper recently launched a paper called The Gainesville Guardian, aimed at the city's African-American population, and has also launched a campus edition aimed at the 50,000 students of the University of Florida. (The paper's circulation has been lagging in both markets.)
