The Gauntlet is Thrown, known in Japan as The Trap of Illusionist No Face (Japanese: 幻想師ノー・フェイスの罠 Gensōshi Nō Feisu no Wana) is episode two of the second Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series (titled Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters in East Asia. The episode was first broadcast in Japan on April 25, 2000 and in USA on October 6, 2001.
With his victory over Seto Kaiba already earning him a reputation, Yugi is sent a package by the creator of Duel Monsters, Maximillion Pegasus. Yugi is then forced into a game of real magic as Pegasus challenges Yugi to a duel in an alternate universe known as the Shadow Realm, where the monsters are real. Pegasus sees all the Yugi's cards and strategies with his Millennium Eye. When the battle is over, Yugi has lost the duel and Pegasus has stolen the soul of Yugi's grandfather.

[edit] Synopsis
At Domino High School, Joey is dueling Téa. Joey gains the upper hand by summoning Rock Ogre Grotto #1 (800/1200). Téa then defeats him by playing the Breath of Light which destroys all Rock Monsters. Joey is annoyed that he can never win. Yugi checks his deck. But Joey has no magic or trap cards. That’s why he always loses. Yugi takes Joey to be taught by his Grandpa. But Solomon doesn’t think that he’s committed or skilled enough. After some begging by Joey and a challenge by Yugi, Solomon decides to try and train Joey after all.
At home, Yugi and his friends are watching the finals of a Duel Monsters tournament. The finalists are Weevil Underwood and Rex Raptor. Joey is exhausted because of Grandpa’s training. Yugi gets a package from Industrial Illusions, the company that created Duel Monsters. Rex Raptor gains a lead against Weevil. Rex summons the Two-Headed King Rex (1600/1200). Weevil summons Basic Insect (500/700). Weevil activates an Insect Laser Cannon to increase his Basic Insects attack points and he attacks, winning the championship. Maximillion Pegasus gives Weevil the trophy and invites Weevil to compete at his tournament at Duelist Kingdom, Pegasus' dueling island.
Yugi opens his package. Inside is a glove, 2 stars and a video. He plays the video, and Pegasus speaks to Yugi through the video. Pegasus challenges Yugi to a duel with a time limit of fifteen minutes. Pegasus takes Yugi and him to the Shadow Realm. Yugi transforms into Yami. The clock starts and the duel begins. Yugi draws but Pegasus can see what Yugi’s cards are. Pegasus counters Yugi’s Komouri Dragon (1500/1200) with the Dragon Capture Jar.
Pegasus explains that in ancient times, Egyptians played with real monsters and magic centuries ago. Pegasus plays the Dragon Piper bringing back the Komuri Dragon under Pegasus’s control. Yugi counters with Silver Fang (1200/800). But it is destroyed. The standings: Yugi 1500 LP, Pegasus 2000 LP (Note that Yugi loses the wrong amount of Life Points, as it would seem for this duel, Komouri Dragon has 1700 ATK points.)
Pegasus tells Yugi about the Millennium Items and the Pharoah. Pegasus plays one card face down and Yugi makes his moves. He thinks of summoning a monster (Zombie Warrior) but Yugi knows that Pegasus knows what he’s going to play because of his own Millenium Eye, an item similar to Yugi's Puzzle. Yugi thinks of playing a card from his deck without even him knowing it. He takes a random card from the top of his deck and plays it, and it is the Dark Magician. It destroys Pegasus’s Dragon. Yugi 1500 LP, Pegasus 1200 LP (Pegasus loses the wrong amount of life points.)
But Pegasus has a plan for him. He plays the Illusionist Faceless Mage (1200/2200). He then plays Eye of Illusion. Yugi attacks his Mage. But the Mage blocks the attack. The duel is over in three more minutes. Yugi summons the Celtic Guardian. (1400/1200). But Yugi’s Dark Magician attacks it. Yugi 400 LP, Pegasus 1200 LP. But the Mage is wide open to attack. Yugi summons the Summoned Skull with seconds to spare. He attacks but time runs out and Yugi loses. But if he was able to finish the attack, he would've won. But since Yugi lost, Pegasus takes Solomon's soul with the Millennium Eye.
