The Main Ingredient is the 2nd album by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Released in late 1994.
It would become their last album since, at the time of writing, the pair have relinquished their plans of a reunion. At the time of its release they were poised to crossover into the mainstream charts, having garnered mass acclaim with this LP as well as the previous, Mecca and the Soul Brother. The Keni Burke sampling "Take You There" was the album's lead off single, followed by 12" remixes of the cuts "I Got A Love" and "Searching". Though overlooked at the time of its release, the album has since been met with high critical acclaim with some considering it more focused, polished and cohesive than its predecessor.
Characterized by sultry soul and jazz samples, The Main Ingredient sees a more refined sound than the duo’s debut, building on the praise that they had already garnered. The album is also notable for its snappy, crispy drums and extensive use of vocal scratches (many of which emanated from Big Daddy Kane’s Long Live the Kane). Continuing the tradition that had started with Pete Rock’s earlier work, brief instrumental interludes are spaced at the beginning and end of songs, often leaving the listener yearning for more. With the exception of just a few tracks, this technique is prevalent throughout the entirety of the album.
