[edit] Overview
The Mullets were formed in 1996 in Henderson, Kentucky while Joey Goebel, Jason Sheeley, and Justin Hope were still students at Henderson County High School. Stemming from typical teenage angst, they wrote humorous and sometimes crass songs about feeling uncomfortable around the opposite sex ("She's Giving Me a Boner," "She's Giving Me a Complex"), not fitting into the high school social scene ("At the Pep Rally"), and general nonsense, ("Juanita is a Whore"). The lyrics were influenced by bands in the style of The Dead Milkmen.
Their playful lyrics, simple melodies, and whimsical stage antics led them to have a powerful following from Evansville, IN tri-state area within a few short years. Fans would often follow the band as they toured small venues around the Midwest. They used the nicknames Joey Goblin, Jason Eggzeroneous, and Justin Hopeless, but fans often referred to them as Joey Mullet, Jason Mullet, and Justin Mullet ala The Ramones.
The Mullets later music such as "Kentucky Waterfall," "'Till My Mom Got A Job," and "At a Flea Market" romanticized life in a small town in Kentucky. They also embodied a nihilistic outlook on society and politics with songs like "We Give Up."
Because of Joey's allergies, the band was never able to complete a full nationwide tour. [1] On June 16, 2001, the band played its final show. Each went on to separate projects; Goebel founded The Novemberists, while Hope and Sheely played occasionally in the rockabilly band, Them Hay Pile Pickers. Joey Goebel later became an award winning novelist.[2]
