The Nightingale-Bamford School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nightingale Bamford School is an all-girls school founded in 1920 by Miss Nightingale and Miss Bamford. It is one of the top-ranked private schools in New York City. Nightingale students are subject to a demanding curriculum and the majority of the graduating class goes on to attend schools within the Ivy League and other prestigious colleges/universities. The school's website has noted the top attended colleges after graduation are Cornell, Dartmouth, UPENN, Harvard, Brown, Columbia, Georgetown, and Oberlin
Nightingale holds a small size of 560 students, approx 45 pupils per grade level. The average class sizes are 12, with the exception of reading and math groups in the Lower School, which holds 5 to 6 students to a teacher
Nightingale is known for its outstanding faculty and employs a number of immensely talented individuals. Two members of the English Department, John Loughery and Christine Schutt, are critically acclaimed award winning authors. Each and every member of the visual arts department is, too, deserving of recognition, and are constantly showing their works in galleries throughout the city and the whole of the United States.
Lower school Nightingale students include girls from grades k-4. Middle school includes grades 5-8, and upper school includes grades 9-12. Especially in upper school, Nightingale students face a challenging curriculum and a demanding workload. Girls in the middle school are required to take six academic courses: History, English, Math, Latin, Science, and either French or Spanish. In addition to these six courses, they take physical education three times a week and music and art classes once a week.
Upper Schoolers may take as many courses as they like as long as these courses fit into their schedule. Also, several privileges are reserved only for the Upper Schoolers. An Upper School student may go out to eat for lunch, use the elevator, and choose her own physical education, music, and art classes (with the exception of ninth graders, who may only go out to eat for lunch once a week). She may also wear any type of Nightingale shirt throughout the day, be it a physical education shirt or Halloween shirt or a polo collar shirt.
The art classes at Nightingale include photography, ceramics, painting, sculpture, video, and much more. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, clubs, publications, and organizations are available to middle and upper school students. Middle school students may select from volleyball, softball, swimming, dance, basketball, track & field, lacrosse, and soccer. In Middle School, there is a no-cut policy, which means that no player may be kicked off a team for lack of athletic ability. Eighth graders may try out for the varsity team if they are deemed ready to compete at such a high athletic level. Upper Schoolers may choose from volleyball, softball, swimming, dance, basketball, track & field, lacrosse, soccer, track, cross country, and badminton.
Nightingale is a part of the Interschool, which includes Browning, Brearley, Chapin, Collegiate, Dalton, Spence, and Trinity.
