The Play What I Wrote
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Play What I Wrote is a musical farce written by Hamish McColl, Sean Foley and Eddie Braben, and directed by Kenneth Branagh.
It debuted in London's West End theatre district to rave reviews. The show is a celebration of the British double act Morecambe and Wise. Besides its irreverent and farcical tone, every show features a "Mystery Guest" – a celebrity who makes a cameo appearance as a performer in the play within a play.
In 2002 the original production won an Olivier award for best comedy with Toby Jones also winning for best actor in a supporting role.
In 2003 the play opened on Broadway where it was nominated for a Tony award. It failed to win and closed shortly afterwards. It was during this run that Roger Moore, as the "Mystery Guest", collapsed on stage.
