[edit] Plot summary
The book is a suspenseful story about a hard-working and intelligent young woman, Quinn Cleary, who wants to go to medical school, but doesn't have the financial resources to attend Harvard or the other top schools to which she has been admitted and is not admitted to the (fictitious) Ingraham College of Medicine in Maryland, said to be the best med school in the world and providing a free ride to every student. Through pluck and some trickery, she winds up getting into Ingraham. The novel then follows her first few months the school, with the usual stress of medical school, an evolving romantic relationship, and gradual success. But Quinn becomes increasingly uneasy about a number of things at the school, especially the herd mentality of all her fellow students, including her boy friend, Tim Brown. When she finally convinces Tim to investigate some of her suspicions, the pace of the novel changes. From here on, it is more of a mystery with realistic horror elements. The students are all being manipulated by "idealistic" people associated with the world's leading (fictitious) pharmaceutical company, who will go to extreme lengths to maintain the brain-washing of the College's students, the best in the world. Why this is being done is gradually revealed toward the end of the book, but it has been sugggested much earlier. The brain-washing is accomplished by a plausible science-fiction device. The tenor of the novel is libertarian.
