In the city of Bayport (where the Hardys live) there have been a lot of car robberies on this road called Shore Road. Mr. Hardy had to go to New York and work on this case dealing with people smuggling foreign weapons into the country. So Joe and Frank had to figure out the mystery by them selves. There is a truck involved with the crime. The tuck will pull out when ever the police are chasing down a stolen car and so the stolen car will get away. The man driving the truck is a farmer named Slagel. The Hardys knew that their friends the Dodds hired a Slagel to work for them on their farm. The Hardys didn’t know a lot about him so they went to ask the Dodds. Dodds said that they hired him but then they fired him because he didn’t do any work and was lazy and mean and just wanted money. Well Slagel and his car stealing gang were listening in on there conversation. So Slagel and his men over night when the Hardys left the Dodds house they Kidnapped the Dodds. The next day since the Dodds were gone everyone suspected that they had left the town because they were accused of stealing the cars because the cops had found a stolen car with some of the Dodds stuff in it. So the Hardys find out where Slagel and his men were hiding the cars. Then Chet and the Hardys find the cave that they hid the cars in. The Hardys and Chet fin the Dodds who were bound and gagged. Then when Chet and the Hardy boys find try and sneak out of the cave they were caught by a man who was the brains of the whole thing. His name was Montrose. He was a very rich man. He was stealing the cars and having them transported in Slagels truck. Then they were painted a new color in the cave. Then they were sent to foreign countries by boat. Then the country would pay them in weapons and send them to New York wear they were smuggled and Montrose’s men got them. So when Chet the Hardys and the Dodds were caught the Hardys and Chet were put in a room. There were canisters that were filled with toxic gasses. 2 of the 5 canisters were filled with oxygen. The Dodds were put in a car, which would be launched in to the water, and they would die. There was a guard standing at the entrance of the room. He was to let the poison out when given the signal and then run out of the cave because they were going to blow up the entrance. Then the Hardys knocked over the oxygen tanks and the air was spraying out. The guard ran out saying that the gasses had been knocked over and they were filling up the room. Then 2 masked men ran in and said that it was just oxygen. Then one of the masked men took off his masked and drew a knife and then stabbed the other man and the guard. The Hardys rescuer was Mr. Hardy. He had snuck onto the ship pretending to be a crew member. Then there were sirens out side. When Chet and the Hardys (including Mr. Hardy) got out of the cave the Dodds were sitting on the ground all wet with a blanket wrapped around each of them. There were several men in cuffs including Slagel and Montrose. The Hardy boys had solved the mystery and saved a lot of lives.
