The Simple Past
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Simple Past (Le passé simple) is a novel written by Driss Chraïbi.
From the back cover of the French edition, published by Gallimard:
Upon its publication in 1954, this book had the effect of a violent bomb, especially in the France that Morocco was fighting against for its independence. With an unusual brusqueness, it projected upon the Maghreb novel in French major themes: the burden of Islam, the role of the female in Arab society, cultural identity, and the conflict of civilizations. Maligned at its debut, commented upon by generations of readers, it has been taught for several years in Moroccan universities. Eighteen doctoral theses have been devoted to it to this day.
