The Trigger Effect (Connections)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Trigger Effect is the first episode in James Burke's documentary Connections. It acts as an introduction and bookend for the series, detailing the prevailing concept of the documentary, that the technology network that supports and maintains civilization is a complex machine made up of an uncountable number of pieces, any one of which can bring down the network if it fails.
It tracks the effects of the Northeast Blackout of 1965, which was caused by an improperly calibrated relay, on several different groups of people.
