From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The University of Birmingham Debating Society is one of the oldest at the University of Birmingham UK. It is a standing society within the University of Birmingham Guild of Students.
The aims of the society are to allow all students at the University to engage in interesting and intellectual debate and promote the skills of public speaking.
The society is unofficially ranked 84th in the world based on the last 5 years results at World Championships.
It organises workshops to train its members to compete in national and international competitions. The society organises more formal debates, normally held on Thursday nights and has attracted guest speakers including MPs and leaders of pressure groups.
It plans to hold a Freshers Debating Cup in October 2007, open to all first year undergraduates at the University of Birmingham.
