[edit] History
The Rip Chords were founded in 1992 by six undergraduate women at the University of Illinois. The women shared a common bond in that they were all girlfriends of members of the Xtension Chords, a men's a capella group at U. of Illinois which was founded in 1991. The ladies grew to fourteen members over the next few years and quickly cemented themselves as a permanent fixture on the U of I campus. They regularly perform all of the the Champaign-Urbana area for university and community groups and host two large shows each year: one in April on campus, and one in the Chicago area in May.
Since their founding, the Rip Chords have released six albums: Freefall (1996), 1180 (1998), Drive (1999), Let Her Rip (2000), Breakthrough (2002), and Presence (2005). They have performed with several well-known collegiate a cappella groups across the country, including Norwestern University's Purple Haze, UVA Academical Village People, and Washington University Piker Society. The Rip Chords annually compete and place in various levels of the ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella).
