[edit] Music
The Michelles began in 2005, in London, UK, where Tim Lalonde met swedish runaway Gustaf Heden, who had the same idea as him, namely to form a band. Former American citizen Lalonde, raised in Richmond, Virginia, just dropped out of college and decided to go to Europe, to play music and get famous like his favourite band The Beatles, and his at this time biggest heroes The Strokes. Heden and Lalonde met guitarist Marc Hayward and drummer Graeme Pearce. The Michelles played their first show at some high school in Berlin, Germany, while being on vacation for some weeks. They improved their own style and played a lot of concerts in and around London, until they got signed for two singles at UK label Cheesedream.
In the end of 2006, after a lot of touring and first single release in October 2006, Heden decided to leave the band and went to New York. The loss of frontman and songwriter Heden was a reason for Lalonde to start new somewhere else, so he took drummer Pearce and both moved to Berlin, Germany. Thus guitarist and London-man Hayward wasn't up for the big move, and was left behind in London, where he is currently playing around with his band The Dash. After moving to Berlin in January 2007, Lalonde and Pearce started seeking for a new bassist and lead guitarist. They played some shows with several people, until they found new bassist Julian von Zittwitz. At the moment, the band is playing shows without a second guitarist, but they engaged Chikinki's rythmn guitarist Ed East for some concerts in the end of 2006.
Currently they have tour dates planned in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, United Kingdom and Hungary throughout April and May.
[edit] Influences & Comparisons
Lalonde grew up listening to The Beatles. He also says, that he got inspired a lot by Weezer and The Strokes. Due to the fact that the band was founded in London, a lot of people compared them to other London based indie bands, like The Libertines, though Lalonde mentioned, that he didn't even know who most of these new British bands were, before he came to London. Almost all the songs of The Michelles were written by Lalonde when he still lived in Virginia, where he just listened to modern indie music made in the States.
