Thodi Khushi Thode Gham (Some happiness some sadness) is an Indian Soap opera about the general battle of the two genders. Sneha is the youngest daughter in law of the Shah family, her battle is against her father-in-law Mansukh lal Shah. Mansukh believes that men should be dominant over women at all times, where Sneha believes that both should have equal rights. Sneha is married to Pranav who is very strong minded and is a good son. Sneha is married in a joint family, which consists of a sweet, strong-minded but shy mother (Daya), a sweet and gentle natured daughter-in-law (Jyoti), a sweet smart gynecologist doctor turned housewife (Bhavna), a strong minded son (Amar), a dedicated son (Manoj), a cool, modern son (Karan), a nosy aunt (Kanta Ben), an apprentice of an uncle (Bhagu Mamaji), two sweet little kids (Alisha and Bittu), a teenage daughter with big dreams (Hetal) and 2 loving but funny servants (Manjit and Santu). That's the Shah family, a Jain joint family living together in a male dominated home. But with Sneha's arrival things start to go haywire.

When Sneha is married, on the first day of her new life the bhabhi's (elder daughter in laws....but translates to older brother's wife) Jyoti and Bhavna and Daya challenge Sneha that she has to change herself in 2 months, and if she doesn't then they have to change themselves to whatever Sneha wishes. Sneha accepts and is ready. Two months go by and events occur and go by. Sneha is determined to open the eyes of the other women of the house, but Mansukh is always 2 steps ahead.

Finally one day Jyoti's father Chadresh gets a big deal from Mansukh's rival- Atul Mehta. Mansukh and Atul have been bitter business rivals. Mansukh and Amar blackmail Chandresh to give the deal to them. Sneha overhears this and tries to tell Jyoti but Chandresh who doesn't want her daughter to suffer, lies and says that Mansukh just called him to give him some business tips. Jyoti is overjoyed to think that her father-in-law cares so much. Sneha then explains to Jyoti about the circumstances, if her dad says no to Atul Mehta then he will ruin him and if her dad says no to Mansukh who knows what he will do to Jyoti. Chandresh is very worried, but in the end he decides that he will help Mansukh.

Atul Mehta finds out about this and is shocked and angry. He sets a plan to ruin Chandresh. He sends a man to his house to search him and he discovers about 80 lakhs! (8 million rupees) and gets arrested. Meanwhile in Mumbai, Jyoti and the rest of the Shah family find out about what's happening in Jamnagar. So Mansukh promises to Jyoti that he will go personally will go and free Chandresh. But a phone call from Sharda(a mysterious woman from Bangalore)stops him and he has to go to Bangalore immediately. Jyoti is shocked and then realizes that Mansukh always does things to his benefit. So she goes to Sneha and says that she is with her in this battle. Soon everyone finds out that Chandresh has kidney failure in both of his kidneys, Jyoti wants to help her father. But Amar and Mansukh disagree, and poor Jyoti feels devastated. Meanwhile Hetal (Mansukh's daughter and the youngest child) wants to join the flying club (her dream is to become an astronaut) and she has already got the form and topped the exam, but needs Mansukh's permission and signature to join. She goes to him, and he says that he will think about it.

Hetal is getting tense because the day is coming nearer and nearer to turn in he form, she goes to Sneha for help. Snhea says that she will sign the form as a guardian. Sneha signs and gives it to Hetal to turn it in. Hetal turns the form in and is accepted. Meanwhile Jyoti is desperate and talks to her father, but Chandresh refuses to accept her kidneys and says that it will be an insult to him. Jyoti doesn't take no for an answer and takes a donor's form and she finds out that she needs Amar's sign. She talks to him and he gets furious and refuses to sign. Amar gets a call from the doctor who says that they found a donor! Jyoti is overjoyed. But Bhavna is in problems, her family is in debt and she tries to talk to Bapuji but he doesn't listen. She blames herself, that since she's a gynecologist and she can't even help her parents!. Then she goes to Jyoti , who had mentioned that if her dad gets the land deal she will lend some money to Bhavna and her family. Jyoti reports that since her dad didn't do the deal with Atul Mehta, Mansukh has the money, Bhavna goes to him and asks for the money, but in reality Mansukh had shown off to Atul Mehta by distributing it to the poor!. Bhavna is sad, but Mansukh arranges her family to live in an apartment in Mumbai. Then Mansukh announces that he is going to get Hetal married to a minster's son! Hetal is devastated since she's not ready for marriage and she wants her dream to come true. But Atul Mehta also has an eye on the minister's proposal, so he wants his daughter Sapna to marry him! but actually Karan and Sapna love each other and don't know whose kids they actually are!.

The next day Mansukh gets a call from the minister himself who tells him that his son is not yet ready for the marriage!. Mansukh is shocked. So he tells his family that he understood what Hetal was going through and told the minister not to come!. Daya and Hetal are overjoyed. So that day Daya goes into Mansukh's room go deliver fruits and Snhea is talking on the phone with a college buddy. Daya overhears Mansukh talking to Bhaghu about the boy and the person Sneha is talking to is actually the boy!!!!Both ladies cant believe their ears. Daya goes to Sneha and they tell the other ladies. Then Hetal gets a letter from the flying club saying that her admission was cancelled!!! Hetal is shocked and calls them up right away and finds out that Mansukh cancelled her admission! Then Sneha says that this is it now they have to fight for their identities. So Sneha starts OG (Operation Gents) to let the men have a taste of how hard woman hood really is!She puts each of the ladies name in small notes and asks Daya, she informs the rest of the group and Sneha says to read off the names she does have and whoever's name isn't called, that's the person to start OG!. Slowly all the names are called and the last one standing is Jyoti! She is scared to death, that night she cant sleep, but finds courage to start the operation

At 5:00 A.M. The milk man comes and its Jyoti's duty to get the milk everyday. So Jyoti wakes up Amar saying that he get the milk since her back is hurting. Amar says no at first but gives in. So he goes to get milk. The milkman is surprised to see him and asks him that where is Jyoti. Amar gets mad and says to mind his own business. The milkman says to get a container to put the milk in. Amar is confused, while the ladies are up and see how the OG is going. Amar is confused and gets a big pan. The milk man asks him what kind of milk will he have. Amar doesn't know so he says give half of both. So after the pan is filled Amar goes slowly and carefully but he slips and the milk spills all over. Hearing the commotion the rest of the family gets up. The ladies are laughing like crazy while watching except Jyoti and Daya who are getting worried. Kanta ben comes to help Amar but falls! then Manoj and then Karan and then Bhaghu and Jyoti!.

Mansukh suspects that something is fishy. Sneha says to change the ways of the Shah household they have to change Mansukh, she asks Daya about it and Daya says that 10th August is coming up. All the ladies are confused and ask Daya about this. She says that on every 10th August Bapuji goes out for 1 while day. Mansukh announces that some of his friends are coming and he will be out of town and he wants everything to go well. That day OG #2 goes in plan. The bahu's go out for some work. Jyoti says to Amar that she has to go to the kid's school. Bhavna says to Manoj that she has to go visit someone and Daya "sends" Sneha away and Daya herself to pretend that she injured her hand.

The guests are about to arrive and the ladies are not in the house!The men are freaking out. They call a chef to cook the food for them. But the chef has some problems and the brothers try to prepare the food and get ready for the guests. The guests arrive and Amar is shocked because they are not ready. But fortunately Daya says to them that she knew that this problem would occur so she called the bahu's and asked them to prepare food. The guests praise the food and hospitality to Mansukh who praises his sons even more. All the women look disappointed that they didn't even get mentioned. Meanwhile Karan is tensed because he has to face his father to tell him that he's in love with his rival's daughter! Karan decides to write a letter to Mansukh instead. He ties to go in his room but can but he forgets his cell phone!so it rings and Bapuji picks it up and ts Sapna who tells him that her dad has agreed to meet him!

10th August is finally here and Bapuji leaves. Daya is packing his bags and asks him that if she could go with him. Mansukh refuses and leaves. Meanwhile the bahu's are trying to find Daya and they find out that she's missing!! But she is actually following Mansukh!.But he finds out and tells her to get out of the car and tells her that she has insulted him!. Daya feels sad and goes back. Bhaghu is talking to a delegate from Korea and is praising the Shah company and Mansukh. Sneha overhears and tells this to the other ladies about a plan she has. Jyoti is with Amar and is trying to make him go against Manoj, and Bahvna is doing the same with Manoj. Both brothers don't believe it at first. So Amar says to Bapuji, that Manoj has a weak stomach and is not easily accustomed to foreign food, so Bapuji tells Amar to go instead. Manoj finds out and is shocked and then hatches his own plan, he tells Mansukh that Pranav will do a better job at it than anyone else. So Mansukh considers Pranav. Amar is furious when he finds out about this and confronts Manoj. The next day Amar comes in Manoj and Bhavna's room where he wants to read a magazine that Manoj has. He starts reading and Bhavna notices that Manoj and Amar's phones look alike so she switches them!.All day Amar and Manoj get frustrated since they are getting calls from unknown people and they both confront each other again. Daya gets tensed after seeing all this, Sneha assures her that everything will be alright.

Bapuji suspects that something is wrong and tells Bhagu to spy on the ladies. Bahgu does his best and finally he comes to the kids who tattle tale about something called OG. Bhagu tries to figure out what OG could possibly stand for. He goes straight to Sneha who answers wittily, in turn he has to answer about 10th August and the Bangalore secret. Bhagu refuses. The door bell rings and Snhea opens the door and finds a man standing over there with a letter he says that this letter needs to be given to Mansukh immediately and its from Bangalore. She goes to open it but Mansukh stops and scolds her. Bhaghu tells Mansukh about OG and both wonder what it is. Bapuji comes to the dinner table where everyone is eating and he starts to praise the unity of his sons to one of his friends on the phone. Sneha and the OG's are talking about the next step which is Necklace OG. Once again Jyoti and Bhavna try to make the brothers go against each other. Jyoti says that Bhavna got a new expensive necklace from Manoj, and Bahvna "blames" (not really ...it's a part of their plan) Jyoti in front of Manoj. Jyoti pretends to cry and Amar gets mad at Bhavna. Bhavna meanwhile is talking to Faiba and says that this necklace was given to her by Manoj but he wants her to say that its given by her uncle. Amar is shocked at this. In the kitchen Manoj comes and Bhavna, Jyoti and Sneha are working. He goes and talks rudely to Jyoti, Amar listens and threatens him that if he talks to his wife like that he will not spare him. The brothers once again fight, right in front of Mansukh's guest!

Bapuji scolds both brothers, the ladies are giggling and laughing at their own plan but Daya is very serious. Manoj and Amar blame each other for getting Bapuji's scoldings. Daya pretends to be sick, the kids find out and tell the whole family. Everyone rushes to Daya, who tells them that she will not eat until Mansukh tells her all the secrets, Bapuji refuses and storms out. Bhaghu is walking and notices that Sneha is sitting down and praising Daya's acting and Daya is eating!!!! Bhaghu then plants his cell phone in Sneha's room to find out about OG!while they are talking the phone records everything. At night Bhagu goes to retrieve it but finds that it's missing! Then later he finds that Hetal has it and gets the phone and goes straight to Mansukh. Meanwhile Pranav returns from his business trip and goes straight to Daya, since he found out about the hunger strike. Daya says that she is fine and tells him to meet Sneha. Sneha is very excited to see Pranav and informs him of the happenings of his absence. Pranav is shocked and tries to patch up the 2 brothers. But that leads to more fights. Mansukh and Bhaghu listen to the conversation about OG and are shocked, suddenly they hear fights coming from outside. Bapuji gets really mad and starts to shout at them then has a heart attack, leaving everyone in shock!!!!

The doctor comes to examine Mansukh and tells the family that he is in critical stage and has to be admitted in the hospital. Everyone goes to him and tells him to go to the hospital, Bapuji refuses saying that this is his home and should be his resting place. He also says that he wants to make a will. Daya is praying to God. Sneha tries to comfort her but Daya totally ignores her! Sneha is totally tensed, since she thinks that Bapuji got a heart attack because of her. Pranav comes and says to her that whoever is responsible for this will pay severely! Sneha gets even more tensed. Sneha starts to blame herself, Jyoti and Bhavna say that its not her fault entirely...they were involved in OG too! Sneha goes to Daya and says that she and the other bahu's have decided to close OG. Daya gets mad and tells Sneha that because of her and OG this has happened. Daya says that till Mansukh is cured, she will not eat or drink anything at all.

Mansukh calls for everyone in the house to his room for an important announcement. He says that his house has been like a temple to him and he wants to live there till he dies. Everyone tells him not to say things like this, but Mansukh signals his lawyer to read his will. The will states that 50% of the Shah property should be distributed among the family members and the other 50% should be given to Sneha!!! Sneha (and everyone else) is shocked...the will states that since she is his youngest daughter-in-law she has misunderstood Mansukh. Everyone goes outside and Mamaji taunts Sneha about OG and how she always misunderstood Mansukh and blames her for his state. Pranav overhears this and drags Sneha to his room and starts to yell at her and then threatens her that if anything happened to Mansukh, he will divorce her! Sneha is shell shocked. Sneha and Bhavna are in the kitchen and Sneha, mentions the divorce talk. Bhavna is so shocked that she drops a vessel filled with milk! Bhavna says that what if Manoj finds out about OG will he divorce her too?. Bhavna says that if that happened to her she has no where to go since after marriage a girl has left her mother's house forever!!!

Mansukh says that he has forgiven everybody except Daya since she didn't trust him. Daya is feeling weak and Faiba says to eat something Daya refuses. Jyoti and Bhavana discuss Sneha's current situation and say that everyone is blaming her for Bapuji's heart attack including Maa. They say what if their husbands threaten them like this?where would they go?how would they live?.Sneha goes to Pranav and asks him that why is he so mad at her. Pranav angrily says that because of her his dad is in this state today!He says that you should be thankful that we haven't thrown you out of the house yet! Bhaghu rushed to Mansukh and tells him that Sharda heard about his attack and is coming to Bangalore. Mansukh gets up and takes out his oxygen mask and blood transfusion device and Bhagu is shocked at seeing him like this!. Mansukh says that he faked his attack but now they have to hurry and stop Sharda!! Sneha is right outside of his room!

Sneha comes in and Bapuji is in bed with his devices back and Sneha says to Bhagu that she wants to talk to Bapuji. She says that everyone is blaming her for his attack. Mansukh tells her to leave since he wants to rest, Sneha starts to cry softly and goes away, she meets Jyoti downstairs but she starts to feel giddy and she faints, Jyoti is shocked. Meanwhile Bhagu says that Mansukh has a keen sense of hearing and how quickly he changed from normal to a heart patient. Mansukh says forget about Sneha think about Sharda!. Bhaghu laughs and says that he made the whole thing up!He knew that Mansukh was faking the attack because he called the Korea delegates and he found out that Mansukh had just talked to them!. Bhaghu asks him why? He replies to show the women their place in this house. Meanwhile Faiba, Jyoti, Bhavna and Pranav are surrounding Sneha. Bhavna is checking Sneha. Pranav leaves with Faiba. Jyoti and Bhavna leave too leaving Sneha in tears. Bapuji says that they will have their monthly meeting since its the 1st. Faiba says he can't in this condition, but Mansukh wants to have a meeting. The sons are discussing the meeting and suddenly Manoj asks Pranav that is Sneha really sick?.Pranav says why. Manoj says maybe she's only acting to be sick so that she wont have to take care of Bapuji. Pranav believes this and is furious. Everyone is trying to get their budgets right. Pranav is looking for a bill and Sneha says that its in the drawer. Pranav starts yelling at her and says not to touch his stuff, Sneha says that it was all on the bed, Pranav says if she argues like this in front of Bapuji, he wont know what he'll do to her!. Sneha is shocked and sad.

Bapuji says that he has called for an ambulance. Everyone is happy, but he goes on and says that he has called an ambulance to go to Virar (the city he goes to on 10th August) everyone is shocked and begs him not to go. The sons are talking to the doctor who says that he can't go to Viraar because he will not return alive!.The ambulance arrives and Bapuji is ready to go everyone is trying to stop him, and the ambulance people give Amar a form to sign. Amar says who will sign it? Bapuji says that no one because this is his last journey ever he will do so himself. Sneha falls on his feet and begs him not to go. Bapuji says on one condition that no one will ever question him about Viraar. S neha agrees. She says that Bapuji wants them to play a game and in the midst the doorbell rings

Santo goes and gets Sneha who asks him who is he talking about. The man says that the telephone operator he drops of everyday. Sneha is confused and says maybe you are mistaken with the nurse. She goes and gets the nurse and her boyfriend is overjoyed to see her, they leave and Sneha is confused, and Bhagu sees all this! Bhaghu goes to Mansukh and informs him. Manuskh says he has a plan. The next morning Bhaghu pretends to be on the phone with the doctor talking about the nurse, and that day the nurse changes much to Sneha's shock. Hetal goes to Mansukh and tears up her form and says that she has been very bad and now she will agree to everything he does. Mansukh is happy. Mansukh calls for his sons and plays the recording that Baghu recorded!.The sons promise to him that they will see to it that the women go back to what they were before. Sneha, Jyoti and Bhavna are tensed and they promise to overcome any challenge together!

The sons come out and are looking angry. The talk to the bahu's very rudely and they say that there is a meeting in 15 minutes!. The bahu's are trying to get their budgets together. They get it ready and the sons insult them and they set new rules. There not to buy and new clothes and makeup for a year, their cell phones will have no outgoings and they will cut the budget in half!.The bahu's are tensed and go to Daya for advice who says that you 3 can mange it. The next morning Manoj is reading the paper and Karan asks him for it, Amar and Pranav look for it too and then Amar yells for Jyoti and Pranav calls for Sneha. Both bahus say that since the budget is cut in half they only ordered one paper. They get ready for breakfast, which is bad Mamaji and sons inquire and get the answer that since the budget is in half they cant get snacks and breakfast items and milk was also very limited. The next day Amar is talking to Jyoti and says that Bhavna was the one to tell Bapuji about OG. Jyoti is shocked. Manoj says the same, that Jyoti told everyone about OG!!!and Pranav says that Jyoti and Bhavna both tattletaled on her!!! In the kitchen the bahu's start to fight! Mamaji informs to Mansukh. The next day the bahus are still fighting and blame Snhea, Hetal watches this. Sneha goes to talk to her and Hetal rudely talks back and goes away.

The half budget affects the men, because they aren't getting adequate things they need. Hetal comes and informs them about the fight, all 4 look pleased and Hetal is confused. Sneha overhears this and figures out that it was a plan. Mansukh says to Bhagu that he feels like having bahjiyas. Bhagu says he'll get them. But as he gets them, the sons are in the hall and are cursing themselves for the budget cut because they aren't getting good food!they smell the bhajiyas and go to mamaji and start to eat them. Bhavna sees this and is upset, she goes in the kitchen where the other two inquire about her disturbance, she says that women are only affected with the budget because the man are enjoying good food!. Sneha says that not she is convinced that neither of them tattled taled on each other! They figure out that it must have been Mamaji! Pranav makes Sneha call her dad and shuts her out.

Mamaji goes and gets the bhajiyas again and gives them to Mansukh. Sneha sees him eating it and is surprised. She asks Bhavna about it, who replies that something that oily will be life-threatening to a heart patient. Sneha says that Bapuji is faking his heart attack. Bhavna and Jyoti are shocked and don't believe them. Sneha's dad comes and Pranav opens the door. Pranav "politely" says that Sneha doesn't listen to him and he had no other choice but to call him. Jatin (Sneha's dad) is mad, Sneha comes and goes to hug her father, but he is very mad, he says in a high voice that how many times will she insult him like this! Sneha gets teary. Her dad says that it would be better for her if she came to Rajkot with him. Pranav speaks up and says that Sneha is his wife and he didn't make him come here to take her away. Jatin is impressed and taunts Snhea, who gets even more teary. Her dad leaves in a fury and Pranav goes away too. Sneha is crying and the bahu's comfort her.

Sneha then decides to search Bapuji's room. She goes and a hand stops her. Its Jyoti and Bhavna. They say that they will help her no matter what. They say that they bribed the kids with chocolates so that they can get Mansukh out of his room. Sneha thanks them and searches his room. Meanwhile the kids tattle again on their mom saying that she gave them chocolates. Mansukh hurries to his room and discovers that there is no one. He calls for the bahu's and Sneha replies that he wouldn't listen to them so they called the kids to get him out of his room. Mansukh is till suspicious and thinks of a plan. Sneha gives Bhavna some medicines she got from her search. Bhavna at once says that these aren't for heart patients!!! They are confused and shocked. Meanwhile Jyoti and Bhavna's moms come and say that Sneha complained about them. They are shocked and go to Sneha and start to yell at her. Poor Sneha is shocked and confused. Manoj and Amar see this and are smiling, meaning that this was their plan.

Sneha is crying and is alone by herself. Bhavna and Jyoti come and start to taunt her, then both if them start to laugh and Sneha looks confused at them. They explain that they know that she would never even think about complaining about them so they pretended to be mad at her. Bhavna, Jyoti and Sneha are in the kitchen on the phone with Mansukh's doctor. Sneha pretends to be a famous heart specialist and tells the doctor that she is related to Mansukh and wants to know what happens to him. He denies at first then Sneha threatens that if he doesn't give information, she will report him to the medical council!The doctor then spills the truth, and the three of them are shocked. The bahu's wonder if the sons knew about it. So they hatch up a plan. They make "karela juice" (bittergourd) and Bhavna tells Manoj to give it to Mansukh. He does and Mansukh drinks the bitter juice!!!. Sapna calls Sneha, but Mansukh also takes up the phone on the other line and is shocked to hear Sneha talking to Sapna about Karan. He then makes up a plan, and next morning he calls everyone and tells him about the plan which is called Bahu #1!

He says that all 3 bahus have to be good and serve all the family members. And the winner gets 25 Lacks! (2.5 million). The bahu's are in the kitchen and Sneha tells the other 2 that Mansukh knows everything and is trying to create a rift between them. Jyoti, Sneha and Bhavna are trying to talk to Karan. Bhavna is deep in thought and the other two ask her what's wrong, she replies nothing. Sneha instructs Bhavna to stay on a look out for Daya while she is talking to Karan. The doorbell rings and there is a girl outside, and Jyoti thinks its Sapna!!! But later on Mansukh says that the girl's name is Mona and she is his friends daughter and also the lucky girl who is going to marry Karan, who is shocked. Sneha and Jyoti want to help him.

Bhavna is going to Mansukh's room and Sneha and Jyoti follow her. They overhear her saying to Bapuji that she wants to be bahu #1! The other 2 are shocked and when she comes outside they question her. Bhavna is looking down, not being able to look at them says that from now on she will not help them and she will be Bahu #1 and leaves! The next day Bhavna, Mona and Jyoti are in the kitchen and Daya comes in and asks Bhavna about tea, she says its ready and on the table. Daya asks her about cleaning, Bhavna replies that she has done that too and also explained to Mona about how this house functions. Daya is impressed and gives Bhavna points. On the dinner table Daya is praising Bhavna. Manoj specks up and says that she has prepared for everything for Mansukh's 60th birthday. Sneha says to Pranav that she will not take part in the contest since she doesn't want to create fights between them. All three brothers sweet talk to their wives, for the money. Sneha still forbids and Pranav gets mad and says that till she wont listen to him he wont talk to her. Sneha is sad but still forbids.

Bapuji manipulates Karan's mind by praising Mona. He then asks Mona about her answer, and she replies that she likes the house and Karan too, everyone is happy except Karan, Jyoti and Sneha. Karan is heartbroken. Meanwhile Pranav is conversing with Sneha with notes. He wrote that he needs to wake up at 7:00 in the morning. Pranav wakes up and is shocked to see it's 8:00 and starts yelling. Then he sees a note that says "Wake up Pranav its 7:00". Bhavna is serving Mamaji and she notices that he's upset. He says that he has a meeting about Mansukh's birthday party and his shirt is still not ironed. Bhavna offers to do it for him, he is ovejoyed and gives her points. Bhavna leaves the shirt at his bed and Jyoti comes in and messes it up! Bhagu is worring and tells Jyoti to hurry up and iron his shirt!. Sneha and Jyoti are happy that their plan is working.

Mamaji is getting late and gets a call from Sneha who is pretending to be an event organizer and says that her boss is out of town and she will herself come to his house. Hetal comes in Karan's room with Mona, and Hetal asks him to take them out, but Karan says no. Hetal tells Mona to get a sweet dish she prepared, Mona goes. Hetal talsk to Karan and tells him that he should forget Sapna and accept Mona. Bapuji and Pranav are talking about Karan's weding and the door bell rings and its Sapna!!! She is actually pretending to be the event orgainizer. She says that she will handle the engagement as well as the party. Mansukh seems suspicious and tells her just to work on the party for now. Karan is shocked at seeing her and Bapuji announces that Karan and Mona are getting engaged!
