Thomas Asbridge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomas Asbridge is a University of London medieval history scholar. He is the author of The First Crusade: A New History, a highly tendentious book. For example, Pope Urban II is represented as proclaiming the crusade in the most horrific and abusive imagery towards Muslims, when in fact the words quoted by Asbridge were written twenty-five years later by Robert the Monk, a sort of yellow journalist of the lower orders of the Church. The actual words spoken by Pope Urban are not known, though it would be best to stick to the sober words of a letter written by Urban at the time -- see http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/urban2-5vers.html#urban
