Thomas Saaty is an American mathematician (currently at the University of Pittsburgh), who developed the widely known and used Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and its generalization to dependence and feedback, the Analytic Network Process (ANP) for dependence and feedback among other theories, to make complex decisions with benefits, opportunities, costs, and risks, and combine them to obtain an overall outcome. In February 2005 he was inducted as member of the National Academy of Engineering.

The AHP/ANP uses paired comparisons to represent judgments and highlights the role of inconsistency in the decision process.

Compared to other techniques like ranking or rating techniques, the AHP uses the human ability to compare single properties of alternatives.
