Was "Cause and Effect" the first time this concept was employed in mainstream television or film?

Another question on Video Games -> Final Fantasy I: "This was a poorly thought out plot as it says nothing about the Fiends of the Elements themselves, and it doesn't make sense for the loop to ever close given the linear nature of time as it seems to be set in the Type 0 universe of Final Fantasy." I've been searching my butt off and I can't find any evidence as to what a "Type 0" universe is. The sentence needs an internal link, or to be re-written.

What about the time turner Hermione uses in the harry potter books? I know it may be considered multiple one-time time travel events, but it is implied that she uses it to repeatedly access the same segment of time.82.24.155.138 00:34, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Heya, I just tweaked several things. Could someone just compare the page history to see if you agree with it all.

• I wasn't sure about category: "Time Travel" vs. cat. "Time Travel in fiction". If we'd discussed "practical"/theoretical applications of time loops, rather than use as a literary device, I guess I'd prefer the former. However, as the article begins "A time loop is a fictional situation...", I guess the latter is more appropriate.
• I'm also not sure if I added in too many internal links. I doubt it, but ya never know.
• Oh yah, does anyone know how to do an internal link to a category? I ended up doing an external link to Time travel television series.

• I think a huge number of the examples listed here aren't time loops, but just stylized version of time travel. For example, the Galaxy Quest example is simply traveling back in time thirteen seconds. The fact that one character remembers he's traveled back in time, but the other character don't is irrelevant; it's not a loop. I think we should make a rule that, in order to qualify as a time loop, time has to reset at the same point more than once. 67.171.163.212 07:34, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Makes sense to me. For starters i removed Witchblade and Sphere. Also Monkey Wrench after watching the video, more because there's no indication at all that they are time traveling. 7 Days and Tru Calling i left in even though each loop only happens once (mostly - i have a vague memory of one 7 Days episode that had multiple loops?), the fact that it happens every episode makes them seem relevant here. Regarding Galaxy Quest - i don't remember, do they use that gadget more than once? --67.171.224.226 05:57, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I just noted Galaxy Quest and Déjà-Vu as not being time loops - rather instances of limited time travel - and will remove them shortly. If those were to count, then perhaos The Butterfly Effect should count - as the lead character goes back in time repeatedly trying to make a change, only to realize he made things worse / different in a non-positive way, and does it all over again. I think we should disambiguate the statement "reset at the same point", though. Time loops, as portrayed in fiction, tend to cause time to -start- at the same point over and over. However, it may end at different times. E.g. Groundhog Day's suicides were well before the day was over and caused an, apparent, instant snapback to the beginning point of the time loop. ( Of course, the character was dead, and presumably wouldn't have any more sense of time passing than the audience of the movie.) I assume that this is what the original poster meant, but the way it is written might imply that the loop is of a fixed length. 83.84.37.84 22:37, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

• The season one finale of Witchblade featured a time-loop that reset the universe to the beginning first season, with the second season following an alternate path.

• Sphere references a time loop in finding a long ago crashed space ship from the future

• "Monkey Wrench" (1997) [1] from The Colour and the Shape by the Foo Fighters
