- March 19 - The US coalition invades Iraq.
- December 13 - Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein captured by United States forces

- September 1 - Beslan school hostage crisis occurs, resulting in the deaths of 344 civilians by terrorists.

- Hezbollah killed three Israeli soldiers and took two more prisoner, Israel invaded southern Lebanon, intent on the destruction of Hezbollah.
Hezbollah and the Israeli government agreed to the terms of the a ceasefire agreement created by the UN.
