[edit] History
The Times Educational Supplement was first published in 1910 as a pull-out supplement in The Times newspaper. Such was its popularity that in 1914, the supplement became an independent weekly publication selling for 1 penny.[1]
By 1999, a separate group of News International- Times Supplements Limited - was restructured to create TSL Education Ltd, at this stage also publishing the Times Higher Education Supplement, and Nursery World. In October 2005, the group was sold to Exponent, a private equity group.[1]
November 2006 saw a re-launch of the newspapers appearance and content, both [[offline|off] and online, becoming a full-colour publication in its print version.
[edit] The TES Today
The newspaper continues to published weekly on Fridays, at a cover price of £1.30. It has continued to combine its print publication with its online presence, particularly in connection with its employment vacancies advertising programmes.
The editor of the main edition is Judith Judd, who previously worked for The Independent and The Observer newspapers. She was preceded by Bob Doe. The deputy editor is Wendy Berliner, who previously worked for The Guardian and The Independent newspapers.
Alternative versions of the publication are produced for Wales and Scotland, named TES Cymru (edited by Nicola Porter) and TESS (edited by Neil Munro) respectively.
[edit] Circulation
Circulation figures for the first half of 2006 show an average net circulation per issue of 76,645, with 99.8% of these being sold in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.[2]
Data from the National Readership Survey suggests that average monthly readership is around 474,000, of which around 90% are in the ABC1 category. [3]
[edit] TES website
The TES website is now split into distinct sections, including 'Community', 'Jobs' and 'Resources'. Under Community you'll find Staffroom forums for teachers. Jobs is home to all the vacancies listed in the TES paper and is updated daily. In the Resource section there's the Resource Bank where teachers upload classroom resources (lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, IWB resources, etc.) to share with other teachers. The Review Bank is home to a database of educational products (books, software, classroom equipment). An electronic archive of TES news articles relating to education and published since 1994 is also available.
