When Princess Anja fails to appear at her betrothal banquet, the tiny, peaceful kingdom of Sessalie is plunged into intrigue. The distraught king calls on two seasoned men to secure his daughter's recovery. Taskin, Commander of the Royal Guard, whose impressive life term as the crown's right hand man holds the kingdom's deepseated respect; and Mykkael, a rough cut newcomer who has won the post of Captain of the Garrison, a scarred veteran with a deadly record of field warfare, whose irregular background and foreign breeding are held in contempt by court society.
As their investigation leads from the palace into the back streets of the citadel, two mysterious deathes cast suspicion on Mykkael's reputation. Taskin's upright grasp of the law, and Mykkael's exotic theories collide in a series of tense accusation as the princess' trail vanishes outside the citadel's gates. Is Mykkael the one champion whose controversial experience can save Princess Anja from a terrible fate? Or is he the deadly weapon sent by an enemy to bring Sessalie a vicious defeat? Command Taskin's fair-minded competence must unravel which truth before an uncanny threat destroys the peace.
