Toads (Nintendo)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Toads, sometimes called Mushroom Retainers, are the dominant species of the Mushroom Kingdom. Toads are native to almost every city in the entire kingdom.
Toads appeared in Paper Mario as the main residents of Toad Town[1], the capital of the Mushroom Kingdom[2]. They were also seen in a toad house no matter what town you were in. According to Goombario, they had been sent to the town by Princess Peach to help the people of the town. They appeared again in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This time they lived in almost every town you visited, showing that they didn't all live in Toad town. An entourage of Toads accompanied Mario and Peach to Isle Delfino[3] during the events of Super Mario Sunshine. Oddly, they were not much help.

[edit] Mushroom Caps

All Toads wear special mushroom caps on their heads (just like actual mushrooms). Interestingly, the coloring of the spots on any respective Toad's mushroom cap reveals intimate details about their personality, especially in the Paper Mario series and the games that follow it. In fact, if Mario or another character talks to any Toad, they will behave like other Toads with the same colored cap as them.
[edit] Normal Types
- Red Spots: Cowardly (in a cute way) and subservient[4]. Most common coloration.
- Light Green Spots: Shy and always happy to talk to Mario. Second most common coloration.
- Blue Spots: The smallest Toads have blue spotted caps. This type is often stressed out, and is the cutest.
- Orange Spots: Very brave. First appeared in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Yellow Spots: Loves to tell jokes. This coloration first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine.
- Pink Spots: Very intelligent. This coloration loves to give Mario hints. Toadette seems to be one of them. First appearance Super Mario Sunshine.
- Purple spots: Bittersweet Toads. (Example: Chanterelle)
- Brown Spots: Toads who are older have this coloration, such as Toadsworth (even though he had this coloration even when he was young).
[edit] Special Types
- Pink Cap with White Spots: Always female.
- Black Cap with White Spots: Only one in existence, serves as the conductor of the Excess Express[5].
- Red Hearts on Cap
- Black Cap with Yellow Spots: Only seen on a disguised Yellow Koopa.(Koopa Bros.)
- White Cap with Red diamond-shaped spots
- Black Cap with Red Spots: Only seen on a disguised Red Koopa.(Koopa Bros.)
- Black Cap with Black Spots: Only seen on a disguised Black Koopa.(Koopa Bros.)
- Black Cap with Green Spots: Only seen on a disguised Green Koopa.(Koopa Bros.)
- Mario Party Toads: Various exclusive colors, as well as one Toad having stars on his cap.
- In the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy, Toads will wear stars on their caps as well as talk to you out in space. It is unknown if Toad will wear one of these caps. If he does that'll prove once and for all that the mushrooms on their heads are indeed caps. They are known as Cosmic Toads, thought the name is conjectural.
Elderly Toads have faded coloration on their mushroom caps. Also, the Toads of Rose Town[6] have striped mushroom caps rather than spots like normal Toads.
