Tommy Murphy Cup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tommy Murphy Cup is the name of a Gaelic Athletic Association competition that the so-called "weaker" counties of Gaelic football participate in. The participants are the teams that were eliminated at the early provincial stages of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and also Kilkenny who do not field a team in the main All-Ireland. The Cup is named after Tommy Murphy, a famous footballer from County Laois. The series of games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association and are played during the summer months with the Final being played in August in Croke Park, Dublin. Recent changes to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship mean that the 2007 Tommy Murphy Cup will feature the eight lowest ranking teams in National Football League unless the teams reach the final of their respective provincial championships.[1]
