[edit] Suggested Listening
My Personal Favorites Check these out if nothing else.
- Jeff Buckley - Anything & everything - he was a genius.
- Sigur Rós - All albums are exquisite; they make beautiful music.
- Robert Johnson - Had a profound impact on both blues and rock music.
- Danielson Famile - Incredibly creative, excellent lyrics, great delivery.
- Radiohead- Great experimental music.
- Bright Eyes - Excellent music played with passion.
- Big Black - Grating noise, driving, relentless, controversial lyrics, Roland.
- Babasónicos - Great Rock en Español from Argentina, experimental, variety of styles, excellent riffs.
- Líbido - Another excellent Rock en Español outfit, from Peru, they know how to rock.
"Rock" <= used very loosely
- Alice in Chains - Pretty much all albums & EPs.
- Fugazi - True indie rock, and good.
- Led Zeppelin - Set the standard and have rarely been challenged.
- Ben Harper - Earlier albums particularly good.
- Gang of Four - Great music and lyrics, Entertainment! is the best.
- Jimi Hendrix - Astounding guitar work, great songs.
- Metallica - Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All & Metallica. Load and beyond are not as good.
- Mudhoney - One of the earliest grunge bands, more grunge than Nirvana. Early stuff is the best.
- Nirvana - Especially Nevermind.
- A Perfect Circle - Lyrics can be questionable, but make you think, like Tool's lyrics make one think.
- Radiohead - Great band, willing to experiment with their sound to good effect.
- Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream is their best work.
- Tool - Although lyrics are extremely dark, the music is amazing.
- Robert Johnson - Make sure to get the complete recordings.
- Son House - Excellent slide guitar work.
- Lightnin Hopkins - Great fusion of electric guitar & delta blues.
- Muddy Waters - Brought slide blues to the electric guitar.
- John Lee Hooker - Unique style of blues, unique = good.
- Eric Clapton - Not as good on his own, Cream & Derek & the Dominoes were quite good, does his best covering blues songs.
Other
- Deltron 3030 - I rarely listen to Hip Hop/Rap, primarily because of lyrical content (almost exclusive focus on sex, drugs & violence), this is an excellent concept album, well devised & executed.
- Gorillaz - Again, not usually into Hip Hop/Rap, but there's almost always an exeption (or 2) to the rule.
- Sublime - Very creative fun music.
