Statues at Nikko Toshogu, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
These are the A-Un statues to the left and right of the outer gate. The A (right) statue has its mouth open, as if pronouncing the syllable あ (ah); Un (left) has its mouth closed, as if saying ん (n).
Many temples and shrines in Japan have A-Un statues.
The photo of the Un statue has been reversed left-to-right.
I took this photograph and contribute it to the public domain.
