Tourism in Sydney

Sydney is a significant tourist destination, with 7.8 million domestic visitors and 2.5 million international visitors in 2004[1]. The most well known attractions include the Sydney Opera House, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Other attractions include Royal Botanical Gardens, Luna Park, the beaches and Sydney Tower.
Sydney is also often referred to as Australia's showcase city, and tourists seem to think so as well with 70% of all tourists going to Australia, making a stop in Sydney.[2]

Centrepoint in Pitt Street Mall houses over 130 specialty stores and forms the foyer of the 305 metre high Sydney Tower. Other shopping areas in, or close to, Pitt Street Mall include the Glasshouse and the MLC Centre. Also in the CBD is Chifley Plaza, houses a selection of expensive brand consumer products. There are also a number of markets around Sydney, particularly on weekends where a wide range of goods and food are avaibable.

Sydney is a host to a number of festivals including the Sydney Festival in January; the Big Day Out, a rock music festival; the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras the Sydney Film Festival and other smaller festivals such as the short-film festival, Tropfest.

The main Sydney nightlife areas include the city itself, Darling Harbour, Kings Cross, Oxford Street, Newtown and Bondi.

Twice-annual international fashion weeks are held, with Spring/Summer collections in Sydney in May, these events show Australia's top designer collections, along with a range of fashion-related products and accessories. The events are usually held at the Sydney Opera House.
