Talk:Toyota VIN codes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It appears to me, from looking at http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=9fr3d9cibqjul?method=4&dsid=2222&dekey=Toyota+VIN+codes&gwp=8&curtab=2222_1&sbid=lc02a&linktext=Toyota%20VIN%20codes and my VIN from a 2005 Tacoma PreRunner SR5 DoubleCab, that the VIN position #5 should not be the "model", #8 should be.
With out looking through every peice of history on this article, I'm wondering if someone changed this recently?
My Tacoma VIN starts with 3TMJU62N45 - the position of the "U" would indicate it as a "Prius" according to the current article - but the posting at answers.com says that the "N" at possition 8 is the model indicator (which is "Tacoma")
Before I go and change these, are there any dissenting arguements?

[edit] System change
I was checking several Corolla VIN codes, and it seems like Toyota changed the system. The 1998-2001 models had very different VIN codes from the 2002-2004 models.
If someone has the information, it would be useful to display both (all?) systems on the page. --Boivie 13:53, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Model year = 0
After checking several Toyotas, it seems like Toyota use the model year code 0 (zero), for all cars exported to Sweden (Europe?). --Boivie 13:55, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Model year = 0
After checking another few Toyotas in Europe it seems like model year is also unused at least in cars sold in Denmark. Btw I am just looking at an Avensis Station Wagon which has a number starting with SB1ER56L80...
[edit] Position 4?
The subcodes for position 4 look just plain wrong compared to both my car and other references I can find. This ref http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t81102.html says position 4 is engine type, not body style. So does this ref: http://www.alltrac.net/VIN.htm.
My car, incidentally, is a good test for a Toyota VIN key: 1993 Celica Convertible US Market 2.2L engine. VIN: JT5ST87K8P0XXXXXX. I'll note that there's no S body style, but an S engine code makes sense. Further, body type in position 8 makes sense according to the information in my second reference.
In any case, it's obvious that Toyota used more than one system over the years, and it's obvious that what's here doesn't work.
Oh, btw: I added the position 3 code 5. I have found more than one ref that says it's an unfinished vehicle, which makes sense since all Celica convertibles were completed by ASC in California. --Aqmxv 16:09, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- For '86-'95 Celicas, position 4 corresponded to the engine series and 6 corresponded to the generation. Here's an example for every generation:
- XXST6XXXXXXXXXXX - 4th generation Celica with an S-series engine (Chassis codes ST18*)
- XXAT8XXXXXXXXXXX - 5th generation Celica with an A-series engine (Chassis code AT180)
- XXST0XXXXXXXXXXX - 6th generation Celica with an S-series engine (Chassis code ST202 or ST204)

That makes sense with my Celica ragtop - it's an ST184 (5th gen Celica with 5SFE engine for US market) --Aqmxv 14:21, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Toyota VIN decoder
The linked decoder on the Toyota fleet page sounds good, but doesn't work so well. I fed it the VIN from my '93 celica and it neither knows that it's a Celica nor knows what kind of engine it is. I guess the codes change every couple of years and if we want to do a good job with this we'll need different decode matrices for different year ranges. --Aqmxv 14:25, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
