Trócaire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trócaire is the name of the overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. The Irish word means 'Compassion' in English. Popular around the time of Lent, they conduct a fund-raising campaign throughout the nation. Famous for their 'Trócaire boxes'—cardboard savings boxes given to Catholic children in school—these boxes are used to keep money saved by giving up something during the Lenten period. The boxes are then sent off to the organisation where the money is used in overseas aid projects. Trócaire was set up in 1973 by the Irish Catholic Bishops.
In response to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake disaster, the organisation raised a record €27.5 million through church collections, street collections and private donations.
