Traitor is a New Jedi Order novel by Matthew Stover. Published and released in 2002, it is the thirteenth installment of the series set in the Star Wars galaxy.

Jacen Solo is captured by the Yuuzhan Vong and placed under the tutelage of Vergere, a Jedi Master from the days of the Old Republic who travels with the Yuuzhan Vong. Jacen escapes from the Yuuzhan Vong to the surface of Vongformed Coruscant -- now renamed Yuuzhan'tar -- with Vergere in pursuit. Jacen now learning of the force's elements of light and dark, uses his newfound knowledge to use Yuuzhan Vong creations against them. Jacen doesn't belong to the New Republic or the Yuuzhan Vong. Jacen belongs to Vergere and the Force.

Traitor is one of the most controversial Star Wars books ever written. Its violent scenes were far more explicit than those in any previous Star Wars books, and it delved into philosophical issues rarely touched on in the Star Wars expanded universe. The book is particularly noted for Vergere's Force teachings. Many fans contend she claimed that there is no dark or light side of the Force, and that only a person's intentions make an action good or evil.Other fans claim that Vergere is repeating the Potentium heresy.
Opinions of the book tend to be sharply polarized. One review at TheForce.net called it "the greatest thing that's ever happened to the EU" and claimed that it "forces [fans] to look beyond" their traditional views of Star Wars. [1] The novel is still a heated topic of conversation on message boards.
