Transcription coregulator
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transcription coregulators are proteins that interact with transcription factors and regulate transcription. They can either be activators of transcription or repressors of transcription. A large number of transcription coregulators function to modify chromatin structure. One major class of transcription coregulators modify chromatin by covalent modification of histones.

[edit] Histone acetylation
One type of covalent modification of histones is acetylation. For example, PELP-1 can act as a transcriptional corepressor for transcription factors in the nuclear receptor family such as glucocorticoid receptors.[1] Many corepressors of nuclear receptor-mediated transcription recruit histone deacetylase to promoters. Many coactivators of nuclear receptor-mediated transcription recruit histone acetyltransferase to promoters.
