Thessaloniki used to have tram from 1893 until 1957 when the Minister of Transportations - and after Prime Minister of Greece - Constantine Karamanlis, suspend it in order afterwards to build the metro.

[edit] Suburban Railway
The creation of a suburban service in Thessaloniki will produce a need for EMUs (some of which have already been purchased by OSE) and the diesel-powered Desiros will probably be transferred to regional services between smaller cities (for example the Larissa-Volos service).

With the suspension of tram, the Organisation of Urban Transportation of Thessaloniki (O.U.T.T.) was created and until today it serves the city with the Bus Transport System.

Apart from the bus system of the city there is another national intercity network of bus transport. A central station of this network is located in Thessaloniki suburban area.

In Thessaloniki exist several taxi companies with large taxi fleets. The color of taxis is the combination of dark blue & white and every taxi driver is obligated to cut a receipt from a special tax mechanism which is in the car. Many taxis illegaly drive in Bus System Lines and create comfuzio.
