Travis Varcoe (born April 10, 1988) is a professional Australian rules football player with the Geelong Football Club in the Australian Football League. He was selected with the 15th pick in the 2005 AFL Draft by Geelong.
Varcoe debuted in the SANFL for the Central District Bulldogs in 2005, at the age of 17.
Rumours are Travis Varcoe is the best young prospect in the last 40 years. His lightning pace, silky skills and brilliant football mind combine to offer the ideal recipe for a future AFL superstar. He would have undoubtedly been drafted at No.1 except for an unfortunate foot injury prior to the AFL draft camp, where it was expected that he would break every record ever set from the beep test to the bench press. Watch this space.
Geelong have high hopes for Varcoe, he has been given the honour of wearing the jumper number 5, a number previously worn by club champions Gary Ablett & Polly Farmer. Likened to Melbourne speedster Aaron Davey, there is little question that Travis Varcoe is a player of the future.
Varcoe's impeccable bloodlines include being related to Sydney dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes and mercurial forward Michael O'Loughlin. He is touted as perhaps the pick of the bunch, with his ability to burst through a pack and snap goals with monotonous accuracy. Varcoe will surely combine well with several other talented young players in Geelong's line up, and it seems only a matter of time before Geelong ascends to a dominant position among the AFL clubs.
Former Brisbane Bear's player Martin Leslie commented on the young star: 'I've never seen such blistering pace. That young bloke is going to run rings around the comp in a few years. mm hmm.' Leslie's ability as a player was highly regarded, most notably with a stunning performance in a goal kicking competition held at the University of Queensland AFL oval in late 2004. His comments echo the general consensus among the games experts about Varcoe's talents.
