Talk:Triumph TR7
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I have a 79-TR-7 that I have had virtually no problems with, until this past weekend. I was driving down the road and it just quit. I pulled over to the side of the road, turned the key and it turned over fine, however, it would not fire. Since it was getting dark and the mosquitoes were out in force, I put up the top and messed with the windows a bit, and then , just for the heck of it I turned the key again to the start position and it started! I then made it home ok (about another 10 miles). So, I'm thinking it's something electrical. Please give me your suggestions and I'm willing to replace parts to correct the problem.
Thank you,
Lee
Lee, I had a 77 that had a similar problem. It would drive fine, then die. I'd set along side of the road for about 10 to 15 minutes and fire the car up. I found the problem to be the Lucas electronic ignition module in the distributor. I found out that this was not an isolated incident for these cars and decided to replace it with an after-market unit. It worked fine for the period that I owned it. If this is your problem, you might look into changing over to the Delco distributor that was available on 80-81 TR-7's. It has the old points system, which is usually foolproof. Good Luck.
