User:Trweiss/sampling and digital recording
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There currently exist a multitude of articles on sampling and digital recording and related topics. I have contributed to many of these and primarily written the article on digital sampling. However, no single article does the subject justice. Together they form a hodge podge which is full of duplicate information and lacks organization.
To begin, I want to add that I am aware (and want to make those who are not necessarily aware) of these two facts:
- Sampling does not have to be a digital process.
- Audio is not the only application of sampling.
It is important to understand this because some of the articles which discuss sampling do so in a very general and theoretical way, and aren't written from the standpoint of any particular application of sampling. But then these same articles go on to discuss specifics of sampling in audio, video, and photography. Other articles are about sampling music specifically, but go into detail about sampling theory.
I think the following articles ought to be reviewed as part of this process:
- analog-to-digital converter
- Digital audio
- Digital audio workstation
- Digital recording
- Digital sampling
- Digital signal processing
- Digitizing
- Dirac comb
- Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem
- Pulse-code modulation
- Sample (signal)
- Sample rate
- Sample-based synthesis
- Sampling - a disambiguation page
- Sampling (information theory)
- Sampling (music)
- Sampling (signal processing)
- Sampling frequency
- Sampler (musical instrument)
- Sound recording
- Synthesizer
I have not found any articles on bit width, word size, or resolution (all of which are terms for the same thing) as they relate to sampling.
I think we need to deliniate which articles primarily dicuss specific topics and which articles refer the reader to main articles working the same general territory. Which article should discuss sampling as a overarching theory? Then, which articles discuss specific applications of sampling such as sound, photography, and video? Which articles discuss the technology which makes each application happen? What articles discuss the cultural aspects of the technology?
I would like to hear from anyone who has ideas about this project: expanding it, working on it, killing it, etc. Include any additional articles that should be part of this process. Please add your comments below and be sure to sign.
Obviously, I am coming to this from the direction of music, so I am biased toward audio sampling. Representatives from other applications of sampling are most welcome.

- Hi Trweiss,
- I have just come across this page while finishing up a merge between digital sampling, sampling (signal processing), and sampling (information theory). I am interested in sampling from the signal processing point of view, so I would like to know what you think of the new article. --Zvika 17:33, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
