[baguhin] Summary
Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet image of asteroid 1 Ceres taken in 1995.
This image shows features as small as 50 km across, including the dark spot in the middle, dubbed Piazzi. It is big, 250 km in diameter, and may be an impact crater or alternatively terrain with different texture or composition. The feature is not readily seen in visible light images.
Says Dr. Joel Parker of the Southwest Research Institute, "If it resulted from an impact, the object that hit Ceres would have been about 25 kilometres across. It must have really shaken things up."
