U. S. Grant High School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1953, the Oklahoma City Public Schools opened U. S. Grant High School, which became the third high school for south Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
During its early years, it was both a junior and senior high school. Later, it was a high school for grades 10 through 12. By 1972, it had grades 9 through 12.
During its first two decades, U. S. Grant High School served its almost all Caucasian student body. During the early 1970's, an experimental integration plan was imposed on the community by court order, which eventually evolved into full racial integration in 1972. African-American students were bused from predominately African-American section of northeast Oklahoma City. Due to the blending of a traditionally white neighorhood with blacks from public housing, U. S. Grant High School was considered a difficult school to integrate. Riots occurred in the 1972 to 1980 period; in 1976, Randy Truett, a white student, was murdered by a black student in a hallway.
The building was considered decrepit, and a new building is being constructed on the current grounds.
U. S. Grant's nickname is the Generals. Ironically, their colors are red and gray.
