Why must all of these userboxes use the British spelling of the word color? I find it so distressing that I refuse to use these userboxes. Niffweed17 00:54, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

I propose a compromise: rather than "color" or "colour", let's change the spelling in all the templates to "coulor". If both sides of the dispute think it's spelled wrong, we're being fair to each. -Silence 09:17, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

• It seemed like a good idea to me at first, but now that I think about it, it seems pretty wasteful to have twice as many templates just because of a dialectal spelling difference; having different templates for different color schemes, for ones with and without images, etc. would be more productive. So how about we have a {{{1|field like this}}} for "colour" and "favourite" to let people replace the words with "color" and "favorite" by means of something like {{user yellow|color|favorite}}? Seems like that would be more efficient, and a similar system is already in use on many templates to allow people to replace "him or her" with either "him" or "her", for example. -Silence 18:35, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

That's what I did -- see yellow and blue. I did create a second template "yellow amer" but I'm not using it. Lefty 18:55, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

I disagree. This will cause countless, neverending, convoluted edit wars over which dialect to use and where. Using whichever spelling the creator of the template used completely avoids any possible future problems regarding British/English variants, and avoids arbitrarily playing favo(u)rites to either. Consistency is good wherever it won't cause harm, but in this case it will cause harm to put unnecessary consistency above neutrality. -Silence 18:42, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

This is getting a bit ridiculous! On hindsight, we should use the British spelling because more people in the world follow British standards than American ones. However, if some American users find this objectional, they could use some userboxes with the American standard of color. Anyway, I feel that this is a very minor issue to be arguing about.
