UFO2000 is a Free and Open Source Software tactical squad simulation computer game, based largely on X-COM: UFO Defense. Its main feature over X-COM is support for multiplayer play; however, it does not yet support a single-player mode. As of now, the stable versions require data files from X-COM to run; the beta versions will run without X-COM, but at a much more limited level.
The game offers both hotseat and networked multiplayer, both of which support a variety of game modes, including assassinations, frontal assaults, and search and destroy missions. Supporting up to 15 soldiers per player, the battlefields in a search and destroy or frontal assault mission can be reduced to rubble in a matter of minutes; the explosives in the game are rather potent.
Currently, there are only a handful of active developers, most notably Serge, who has been performing most of the engine tweaks and addressing game balance issues, as well as recommending courses of action to other members of the development team.
