Uganda Waragi is the leading branded distilled beverage in Uganda, and its production process classifies it as gin. It is produced and marketed by East African Breweries Limited.
Uganda Waragi is made from millet, and triple distilled. It is known in Uganda as "The Spirit of Uganda," or simply UG. The bottle label is typically gold coloured. It is available in four formats: 750, 350, 200, or 60 milliliters. It's alcoholic content is 40% alcohol by volume. The main markets include other African countries such as Rwanda, Congo and Sudan.
[edit] History
Waragi derives its name from "war gin" as the British colonial expats in the 1950s and 1960s referred to the local enguli that the locals would drink for courage at the battlefields. In 1965, "The Enguli Act" decreed that distillation would only be possible under licence, and distillers should sell to the government run Uganda Distilleries Ltd – which produced a branded bottled product, marketed under the name Uganda Waragi.
[edit] Recommendations
The producers of Waragi recommend five ways to drink their product: on ice, in cola, with lime, with ginger ale, or with tonic.
