United States Numbered Bicycle Routes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The system of United States Numbered Bicycle Routes is an integrated system of regional bicycle routes in the United States. It is the bicycle route equivalent to the system of United States Numbered Highways.
The system was established in 1982 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for the purpose of "facilitat[ing] travel between the states over routes which have been identified as being more suitable than others for cycling."[1]
The system initially consisted of two routes, and still does to this day:
- U.S. Bicycle Route 1 originally ran from the state of Florida north to Virginia. It has since been extended to Maine.
- U.S. Bicycle Route 76 originally ran from the state of Illinois east to Virginia. It has remained the same since 1982.
An AASHTO task force is studying further expansion of the system of U.S. Bicycle Routes.[2] [3]
