University of Hradec Králové (in Czech Univerzita Hradec Králové) was founded in June 21, 2000 by renaming the University College of Education (Vysoká škola pedagogická). It is attended by around 7,000 students.

In 1959 Pedagogical Institute was set up to prepare teachers for the grammar schools. After 1976 the programme was extended to produce teachers for all levels of education in Czechoslovakia. In 1993 Faculty of automation and informastion technologies was established (renamed in 2000 to Faculty of Informatics and Management). In 2000 name of the whole institution was changed (the old name being associated with rather inferior quality). In 2005 Faculty of social studies was established.

All parts of the university are located in Hradec Králové, capital of the Hradec Králové Region. Two student dormitories have capacity over 900 beds [5].
