The University of Nebraska at Omaha, founded 1908 as the University of Omaha, is the Omaha, Nebraska, campus of the University of Nebraska system, and is the second-largest institution of higher education in Nebraska (after the University of Nebraska–Lincoln), located in the metropolitan area.In addition, the University of Nebraska at Omaha enjoys a very strong academic reputation in information science and technology, criminal justice, business, public affairs etc.. for a college its size. In 1931, the university became the public Municipal University of Omaha, and assumed its current name in 1968 following a merger with the University of Nebraska.

UNO is the home of the Peter Kiewit Institute a $70 million state-of-the art computer science facility and engineering facility, making it one of the premier computer science,management information systems(MIS) and bioinformatics programs in the region. PKI houses UNO's College of Information Science and Technology and UNL's College of Engineering and Technology. The College of information Science and Technology offers undergraduate/graduate degrees in Computer Science, Management Information Systems and Bioinformatics (graduate degree offered in collaboration with UNMC's Pathology's graduate program). In addition, the University of Nebraska, Omaha enjoys an excellent reputation and the following are the national rankings for the undergraduate and graduate programs are:-

- UNO received a top schools ranking for the Universities–Master's Midwest region.
- UNO is listed in the top 150 ranked undergradute business programs nationally.
- UNO's Service Learning program was recognized as ''an Academic Program to Look for''among 42 programs listed nationally. It is the only program named in Nebraska and the plains states.
Entrepreneur Magazine Entrepreneurial Colleges
- UNO ranks among the top 10 in the Entrepreneurial Colleges in the limited curriculum category, which included more than 120 colleges and universities.

The school's sports teams are called the Mavericks. They participate in the NCAA's Division II and in the North Central Conference, except in ice hockey. The hockey program competes in Division I as a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The men's ice hockey program reached the NCAA post-season tournament in the 2005-2006 season. The women's soccer and softball teams have won the NCAA's Division II's national championships.
