University of Peradeniya is the oldest university in Sri Lanka and is a renowned state university, funded by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka .

University of Peradeniya is located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, in the heart of Peradeniya, just 30 minutes from the historical city of Kandy.This is the largest university in the island, in terms of size and is situated in a site full of natural beauty, in close proximity with the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya. The university premises covers about 7 square kilometres of land. The Mahaweli river flows across the campus in a northerly direction, enhancing its beauty even more.The site also touches the lower slopes of the Hantana range, giving it a mild climate, where the temperature usually fluctuates between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius.
It is also the country's only residential university, paving way for a wide variety of facilities and resources, making the student experience a truly inspiring one. It was found as the University of Ceylon on the 1st of July, 1942 and was later changed to University of Peradeniya after it was shifted to Peradeniya on the 6th of October, 1952. Today, the university stands as a prominent educational institution in the country, catering to the needs of students from a variety of academic streams, ethnic groups and religions.

The university currently constitutes of seven academic faculties, serving approximately 6600 undergraduate and 1200 post-graduate students from all-around Sri Lanka.
